Disney’s Animal Kingdom is a sprawling, massive theme park. We’ve been there and done that—here are the Top Animal Kingdom Mistakes to Avoid in 2025 & 2026. A little planning keeps the fun high and the stress low.

You are not creating a plan for your visit.
You need a plan at Animal Kingdom. Distances are enormous, showtimes matter, and you don’t want to miss the headliners.
Learn the basics before you go: Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass, Early Theme Park Entry, Extended Evening Hours on select nights (only occasionally at Animal Kingdom), single rider line, mobile ordering, and Advance Dining Reservations.
List your must-dos (e.g., Flight of Passage, Kilimanjaro Safaris, Expedition Everest, Festival of the Lion King) and build around those.

Thinking you have to purchase a Lightning Lane Multi Pass
Lightning Lane Multi Pass is the current skip-the-line system, and it isn’t cheap. You pre-select return times for three attractions, then add more after you redeem your first attraction. Unlike other parks, there are no tiers in place at the Animal Kingdom. Animal Kingdom is usually the cheapest park to buy a Multi Pass for, and the least essential. If you’re at rope drop, you can often do everything without it.
If you decide to buy, our recommended choices are: Na’vi River Journey, Dinosaur (until it closes), and Kali River Rapids. Select early, and you should be able to secure the other rides.
Visit our Guide to learn more about Multi Pass.
Thinking you have to pay extra for Avatar Flight of Passage
Flight of Passage is not included in Multi Pass. It’s the only Animal Kingdom attraction sold as a Lightning Lane Single Pass (pay-per-ride). It’s a must-do, but you don’t have to pay: rope drop, or jump in line near park close (posted waits are often inflated in the final hour).

Not checking if the kids are tall enough to ride.
Before planning attractions, ensure that everyone who wants to ride is big enough to do so. Disney enforces height limits rigidly, and you will not succeed in arguing with the cast members. If the kids are not big enough to ride, ensure they are aware of this beforehand.
Current minimums at Animal Kingdom:
- Avatar Flight of Passage – 44 in (112 cm)
- DINOSAUR – 40 in (102 cm) — final day Feb 1, 2026; closes Feb 2, 2026
- Expedition Everest – 44 in (112 cm)
- Kali River Rapids – 38 in (97 cm)
However, if the kids are too small to ride, it does not mean adults and older siblings can’t. Rider Switch, also known as child swap, enables guests with small children to take turns riding while another adult stays with the child. Visit our Guide to learn more about Rider Switch.

You can’t access the park’s Wi-Fi.
Don’t even consider entering without a device to access Wi-Fi. You’ll use My Disney Experience all day for:
- Lightning Lane management & plans
- Mobile Order
- Maps, wait times, showtimes, park hours
- Alerts about changes & closures
Before rope drop: log in, link tickets, add a payment method, turn on notifications, and update the app.
Not planning Animal Kingdom dining reservations.
Table-service options are limited and popular at the Animal Kingdom (Hello, Yak & Yeti!). Advance Dining Reservations open 60 days prior (Disney resort guests receive a length-of-stay booking option). Walk-ups are sometimes possible, but they often result in long waits.

Missing the shows
Animal Kingdom is not all about rides! There are some sensational Broadway-style shows at Walt Disney World, and some of the best are at the Animal Kingdom.
Festival of the Lion King and Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond! are excellent, air-conditioned breathers. Aim for midday showtimes when the heat and lines are at their peak.
Riding Kilimanjaro Safaris at high noon.
Midday heat equals sleepy animals, harsh sun, and squinty photos. It’s the least dynamic time of day on the savanna. Ride early morning, when animals are most active, and if you can, again near dusk for a totally different experience.

Skipping Wilderness Explorers because “it’s for little kids”
Well, it probably is for children, but we can all be kids at Disney! It’s a brilliant, low-stress way to explore trails, meet educators, and pace the day. The trails are often missed at Animal Kingdom, and it is a mistake.
Grab a Wilderness Explorers booklet on the bridge from Oasis to Discovery Island and collect a few badges between headliners. It turns walking time into wins.
Not having a break.
One option is to return to your hotel for a few hours. If you decide to stay in the parks, take plenty of time out & don’t skip meal breaks.

Not bringing park essentials.
Keep it light but smart: a refillable water bottle, poncho, sunscreen, hat, portable charger, medications, and snacks.
We have created a guide to what we recommend putting in your park bag.
Not realizing there would be a lot of walking.
Ensure your shoes are worn in and comfortable, as you will be doing a lot of walking. Animal Kingdom is a massive park.
Be prepared to hire a stroller for all children under five and some older kids.

Not using the lockers for Kali River Rapids.
There is no longer dry storage for belongings on Kali River Rapids. Your belongings will get wet, perhaps very wet. Lockers are free and located near the entrance to the attraction.
Yes….We made this mistake & our stuff got wet!
Use the Single Rider Line.
Expedition Everest has a Single Rider Line — use it to have a reduced wait if you are happy riding solo.
Flight of Passage also occasionally operates an unofficial Single Rider.
