Universal Studios Florida: The Basics
Universal Studios Florida welcomes around 10 million guests annually and opened on June 7, 1990. It was the first theme park to open at Universal Orlando Resort & opened shortly after Hollywood Studios. The park’s theme is the entertainment industry.
Universal Studios is loud, flashy & bold. It differs from Walt Disney World, but that’s not a bad thing. The majority of attractions are big E-Ticket experiences. Universal doesn’t keep many small “filler” rides or long-running sentimental favorites (E.T. the exception).
Universal Studios Florida tends to appeal most to families with tweens/teens and young adults (or anyone who loves thrills). There are now more options for little kids than before, thanks to DreamWorks Land, but the overall line-up still skews towards older children. Most guests will need 1–2 days to explore everything; you may need extra time during holidays and school breaks.

New at Universal Studios Florida
Minion Land on Illumination Ave opened in 2023, anchored by the new attraction, Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast. This moving walkway blaster experience is rather silly, but good fun. In addition, Despicable Me Minion Mayhem is in the area, and the new Minion Café.

DreamWorks Land opened June 14, 2024, replacing most of Woody Woodpecker’s KidZone. There are new shows, meet and greets, and play areas. The main attractions are Po Live! and the former Woody Woodpecker coaster, which has been rethemed as the Trolls Trollercoaster.

Universal Mega Movie Parade debuted in July 2024 and is the resort’s biggest daytime parade to date. It includes 13 floats and 100+ performers featuring E.T., Back to the Future, Jaws, Ghostbusters, Jurassic World, Minions, Trolls, and Kung Fu Panda. In runs on select dates, often 2:00 pm or 6:00 pm; check the App the day you visit. The parade is a significant improvement on Universal’s previous parades and is now a worthy rival to Walt Disney World.

CineSational: A Symphonic Spectacular is a nighttime lagoon show that debuted in June 2024. It runs seasonally around peak periods. Confirm showtimes in the App.
Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit closed permanently on August 18, 2025, for a new attraction.
Unlike Walt Disney World, Universal keeps details of new attractions low-key. Often, Universal only confirms the opening of a new attraction close to the opening date. The next big attraction at Universal Studios will be the replacement for Rip Ride Rockit, but at the time of writing, there hasn’t been any confirmation of what this will be.

Universal Orlando Tickets
Universal Orlando has several ticket options, but the most significant decision when visiting Universal Studios Florida is whether you want to buy a Park to Park Ticket. Guests who do not purchase this option cannot ride the Hogwarts Express.

Express Pass at Universal Orlando
Like many theme parks, Universal Studios Florida has a system for priority boarding of attractions. The system is called Express Pass, and it is not cheap. The decision on whether to buy an Express Pass can be difficult. At quieter times of the year, it is usually not essential.
There are different Express Pass options, and guests staying at some of the top Universal Resorts receive Express Pass as an added benefit. You can learn more about the options available in our Guide to Universal Express Pass.

WiFi & The Universal Orlando Resort App
Free WiFi is available throughout Universal Studios and, in most areas, is of good quality.
The Universal Orlando App shows wait times, maps, mobile food ordering, and store tickets. Universal Pay in the app lets you link a card and pay with a QR code; you can also set spending limits for your party.
The Universal Orlando Resort App is available at the Apple App Store & The Google Play Store.
Height Restrictions Universal Studios
The majority of attractions at Universal Studios Florida do carry height restrictions, and these are enforced strictly. Unfortunately, this does mean there aren’t many attractions that the youngest guests can ride. The following attractions have restrictions, including attractions where you must be with a supervising companion if under a specified height:
- Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts — 42″/107 cm (under 48″ requires a supervising companion)
- Revenge of the Mummy — 48″/122 cm
- Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon — 40″/102 cm (under 48″ only with companion)
- MEN IN BLACK: Alien Attack — 42″/107 cm (under 48″ only with companion)
- The Simpsons Ride — 40″/102 cm (under 48″ only with companion)
- E.T. Adventure — 34″/87 cm (under 48″ only with companion)
- Despicable Me Minion Mayhem — 40″/102 cm, or any height in stationary seating
- TRANSFORMERS: The Ride-3D — 40″/102 cm (under 48″ only with companion)
- Fast & Furious – Supercharged — 40″/102 cm (under 48″ only with companion)
- Trolls Trollercoaster (DreamWorks Land) — 36″/92 cm (under 48″ only with companion)
- Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast: no minimum height (under 48″ requires a companion); no hand-held infants.

Child Swap at Universal Studios
If the kids are not big enough to ride, it does not mean you have to miss out. All rides at Universal Studios have a Child Swap facility. Child Swap, also known as Baby Swap, allows the rest of a family to ride an attraction when a child is too small or young to experience the ride.
A non-rider waits in a designated area while the rest of the party rides, then adults swap without re-queuing. Ask the Team Member at the entrance for the process at each attraction.

Meeting Characters
There are numerous character opportunities at Universal Studios Florida. Most meet-and-greets are scheduled with details available in the App. However, unscheduled meet and greet might happen throughout your day. Most characters will sign autographs, and waiting times are often shorter than at Walt Disney World.
Characters you might meet at Universal Studios include:
- Minions & friends at Illumination Theater in Minion Land.
- Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, Po, Puss in Boots, and Trolls in DreamWorks Land.
- The Simpsons, Scooby & Shaggy, Optimus Prime & Megatron, Doc Brown, Men in Black, SpongeBob, and more.

Helpful Information When Visiting Universal Studios Florida
Park Hopping
There is only a short walk of approximately 200m between Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. Guests can also jump between parks by riding the Hogwarts Express at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. However, you must have a park-to-park ticket to ride the Hogwarts Express.

The Lands at Universal Studios Florida.
Universal Studios Florida now features eight areas (plus the lagoon): Minion Land on Illumination Ave, Hollywood, New York, San Francisco, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley, World Expo, Springfield, U.S.A.: Home of The Simpsons, and DreamWorks Land.
Most attractions have a height requirement, and kids under 48″ (122 cm) typically need a supervising companion on rides.
Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit recently closed for a new, yet-to-be-announced attraction. The Previous Production Central Area has now been split between Minion Land and New York.

Minion Land on Illumination Ave
Minion Land replaced much of the previous Production Central area. The Minions are now a massive franchise, and Universal is making maximum use of this popular property.

- Despicable Me Minion Mayhem is a silly simulator attraction with minions. The attraction used to be in 3D, but later changed to 2D. You must be at least 40″ to ride, but there are stationary seats that anyone can ride.
- Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast is the one new attraction that opened with Minion Land. It is a moving walkway blaster game that has no minimum height requirement. I’m not sure I fully understand what you are meant to do, but it is fun.
- Meet & Greets are available at Illumination Theater.
The theming of Minion Land is all good fun, and the area includes a couple of stores and snack stops. However, don’t miss Minion Café, which serves some of the wackiest and creative food Universal has created to date.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley is one of the most amazing theme park experiences globally. Diagon Alley was the 2nd part of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter to open after Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure.
Before entering Diagon Alley, you see a “Universal reconstruction” of modern-day London. King’s Cross Station and the Knight Bus are located in this area.

As you enter through the red-bricked barrier into Diagon Alley, it is impossible not to be stunned by the wonder of the setting. Guests can easily spend several hours wandering through the shops and mysterious sights that await them. Highlights include the Leaky Cauldron, Ollivanders, and Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes.

Make sure you don’t forget to turn into Knockturn Alley. This dark area has a mysterious and sinister feel, including stunning special effects and unique shops.

There are two rides in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley:
- Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts is a fantastic 4D coaster, but perhaps the highlight is walking through Gringotts. A fire-breathing dragon sits atop the building, and inside, you will meet the incredibly realistic goblin bank clerks. You will encounter various other stunning pre-shows in a likely lengthy wait. However, the wait is worth it when you board the ride. Half coaster and half 3-D simulator, this is a stunning ride as you encounter villains while exploring the depths of the vault. Min height: 42”/107cm

- Hogwarts Express travels to Islands of Adventure, but there is plenty to see on this magical train. You must have a park-to-park ticket to ride, and the attraction is different in both directions. The ride is great fun, and everyone can ride!

Take your time in Diagon Alley; the rides are only part of the experience, as there is so much to see.

Hollywood
- Universal Horror Make-Up Show is one of the original attractions at the park. This amusing show, which small children find frightening, demonstrates the art of horror make-up.
- The Bourne Stuntacular was an all-new addition to the park in 2020. This stunt show, based on the Bourne film series, is in the old Terminator building. I wasn’t expecting much from this new attraction, but it is terrific.
- Animal Actors On Location! fun animal show
- E.T. Adventure is a theme park classic & only 1 of 2 remaining attractions from opening day. This adventure is fantastic fun for the entire family, but kids must be at least 34” (86cm) to ride.

New York
- Revenge of the Mummy is a terrifying, dark coaster with some awe-inspiring effects. The ride is fast and does have a backward section. You must be at least 48” (122cm) to ride.
- Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon: A fun simulator where the audience races against Jimmy Fallon. You must be at least 40″ (102cm) to ride.
- TRANSFORMERS: The Ride-3D is an impressive simulator, but I don’t know what is happening! In my opinion, you really have to have seen the film to understand the plot of this attraction. You must be at least 40″ (102cm). Children between 40″–48″ (102cm-122cm) must be accompanied, but we do not feel this attraction is suitable for young children.
- Meet the TRANSFORMERS, including Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, and Megatron.
- The Blues Brothers Show Classic street entertainment with Jake and Elwood Blues. Try to grab an autograph before they leave.

World Expo
MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack I’m not very good at this spinning, shooting attraction. However, it is strangely addictive and is great family fun. You must be at least 42” (107cm) to ride. Make sure you listen to when to press the button!

Springfield, U.S.A.: Home of The Simpsons
Now that Disney owns The Simpsons, it might only be a matter of time until this area is replaced. Wouldn’t it be great if Back to the Future: The Ride returned?
- Kang & Kodos’ Twirl ‘n’ Hurl is a fun, Dumbo-like ride, but it has some added zaniness from The Simpsons.
- The Simpsons Ride, perhaps this is starting to feel a little dated, but it is still good fun. The Simpsons are brought to life in this simulator attraction. You must be at least 40” (102cm) to ride.

San Francisco
Fast & Furious – Supercharged. Unlike the Hollywood version, this is in 2D. Guests board a party bus and end up on a high-action adventure. Overall, the attraction is somewhat confusing and lacks the usual Universal “wow factor.” Operating hours are now sometimes reduced, which suggests it might be a candidate for replacement. Kids must be at least 40″ (102cm) to ride.

DreamWorks Land
DreamWorks Land opened in 2024, replacing the former Woody Woodpecker’s KidZone. The land contains Dreamworks-themed playgrounds, character meet and greets, and areas to explore, plus several attractions:
- Trolls Trollercoaster is a family coaster that is an excellent introduction to coasters for little ones—minimum height 36″/92 cm.
- Po Live! An interactive digital show where Po teaches kung fu while babysitting his baby cousin and cooking some delicious snacks.
- DreamWorks Imagination Celebration is a live show featuring Shrek, Trolls, and Kung Fu Panda.

Big Entertainment At Universal Studios Florida
Universal Studios’ parades have never been the highlight for many guests, but at least they gave something special for younger visitors. However, the latest parade is a Blockbuster!
Universal Mega Movie Parade opened in 2024 and is Universal’s biggest parade to date. It features 13 floats and 100+ performers. Some of the films featured include Back to the Future, Trolls, Jaws, and Jurassic World. In 2025, it runs on select dates, most often at 2:00 pm. Check the App for exact times on your date.

CineSational: A Symphonic Spectacular is a not-to-be-missed nighttime lagoon show. It is a seasonal show on select evenings. (select evenings; seasonal). Featuring fountains, projection mapping, music, drones, and fireworks. The best views are usually around Central Park (New York waterfront) and the Hollywood side of the lagoon. Check the App for times when you visit.

Universal Studios Florida Dining
Universal Orlando has not yet reached the same level as Walt Disney World in terms of dining options. While food quality has improved in recent years, the breadth of choice trails Disney. Dining options, however, in our opinion, represent better value than Walt Disney World.
Universal Studios Florida offers only two table service options, both of which can be booked through the park’s website. While walk-up tables can be available, we strongly recommend booking in advance. Reservations can usually be secured on the morning of your visit, although planning is always recommended, especially in peak weeks.
- Finnegan’s is a traditional Irish-themed pub serving a selection of dishes, including Bangers and Mash, Shepherd’s Pie, and Guinness Beef Stew. There is a wide choice of ales available to go with your meal.
- Lombard’s is Universal Studios’ flagship restaurant and was present when the park opened. This seafood restaurant serves favorites like lobster roll, fish & chips, and cioppino ocean bowl. However, the restaurant also serves meat dishes for those who would rather avoid seafood.

Quick Service Locations
In addition to the two full-service restaurants, there is a choice of casual dining locations. The options have dramatically improved in recent years.
Some operate as “semi-table service” through mobile ordering. You order from your phone, scanning a QR code on your table, and the food is brought out to you. The process is becoming more common across the resort.
Arguably, the headliner Quick Service is Minion Café, which allows table ordering through the App. Whatever you desire, you are likely to find a suitable Quick Service location in Universal Studios.

Special Events at Universal Studios Florida
Mardi Gras
Universal Studios currently celebrates Mardi Gras from February to the end of March, although dates do vary and have run to mid-April. Events are included in your park ticket and can attract big crowds. Music, street entertainment, and stores selling New Orleans cuisine are available nightly.
However, the Mardi Gras parade with bead-throwing is the highlight of the festivities. The parade is great fun and has some outstanding costumes & floats. While New Orleans events are known for their adult nature, the Universal version is a family-friendly affair. On select nights, there are live music concerts.
Christmas at Universal Studios Florida
Universal Studios celebrates Christmas with a selection of special features. The highlight for many guests is the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, which has special decorations and entertainment.
Universal’s Holiday Parade featuring Macy’s occurs daily.
July 4th
The park traditionally celebrates Independence Day with special entertainment plus a massive fireworks display. Expect equally massive crowds!
Halloween Horror Nights
Held every fall are the massively popular Halloween Horror Nights. These special events are not included with regular admission and attract an extra admission fee. Regular guests should note that Universal Studios Florida closes early on these nights.
The events are genuinely terrifying and are not recommended for those under 13. There are live shows, character interactions, and open-air scare zones. The night’s highlight is the haunted houses, which can attract large crowds.
