Don’t attempt Universal Orlando in one day.
Once upon a time, you could do Universal in a day. Not anymore. With three theme parks and a water park, you’ll struggle to “do it all” in a few days, even with an Express Pass.
We believe a minimum of three full days is necessary to enjoy Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and Epic Universe. If you plan to visit Volcano Bay as well, make it four. You probably won’t manage everything in four days, and you can now easily spend a week in the resort.
Get tickets in advance.
Tickets for Universal Orlando are almost always cheaper to purchase in advance of your vacation. Exclusive tickets are available for specific countries if you buy them before traveling; for example, UK tickets are usually much cheaper.
Universal Orlando offers several ticket options, but the most significant decision is whether to purchase a Park-to-Park Ticket. Guests who do not buy this option cannot ride the Hogwarts Express. For 2025, Universal sells dedicated Epic Universe day tickets and combos that pair Epic with the legacy parks on separate days. Expect ticket options to change in 2026.
Make sure you have a gate-ready, scannable ticket, not a voucher. Vouchers must be exchanged upon arrival, which can result in joining a very long line at the ticket booths.

First-time visitors should buy a Park-to-Park ticket
I wonder why Universal still sells individual park tickets. However, if you don’t buy a Park-to-Park ticket, you can’t ride the Hogwarts Express. We still don’t know why anyone would want to skip this on a first visit. In addition, you’ll lose the flexibility of hopping between Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.
The Hogwarts Express takes you from Universal Studios to Islands of Adventure and vice versa. Each direction is a unique adventure, and you should take both journeys.
Record your ticket numbers.
What do you do if you lose your ticket? It is easy if you have recorded your ticket number. If you visit Theme Park Services, they will issue new tickets. Snap a photo of each ticket (front and back) as soon as you receive them.
We learned the hard way and had to phone the UK to get them back.
Get an Express Pass if the parks are going to be busy.
Universal Orlando, like many theme parks, has a system for priority boarding of attractions. At Universal Orlando, the system is called Universal Express Pass.
Universal Express Pass allows you priority boarding at most attractions at Universal Orlando Resort. Present your pass at participating attractions to bypass the regular lines. You will join a shorter Express Pass line and have a reduced wait compared to the regular line.
Express Pass is available at Epic Universe, but is limited to skipping the regular line once per eligible ride. Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios also sell an unlimited option.
Unfortunately, Express Pass is not inexpensive, but it is essential for many guests during peak periods. Not purchasing will mean longer waits and fewer rides, but a cheaper vacation.

Stay in one of the Universal Resorts.
Universal Resorts are great fun, and as part of your package, you receive early admission to the parks.
If you stay at Portofino Bay, Hard Rock, or Royal Pacific, an Express Pass (valid for Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios only) is included in the price. Often, this can work out cheaper than buying an Express Pass for each party member. Indeed, if 3 or 4 of you are in the same room, this can be a very cost-effective option.
New for 2025, the nearby Stella Nova and Terra Luna resorts serve the Epic campus and include Early Park Admission. Universal Helios Grand Hotel has a dedicated Epic Universe entrance and is a more luxurious resort, but does not include an Express Pass.
Use Early Park Admission.
Each day, select parks open up to one hour early for hotel guests and select ticket holders. This includes Epic Universe most days. If you have access to Early Park Admission, use it to knock out one or two headliners before regular crowds arrive.
The parks that open early do vary, and so do the open attractions. Be sure to check the Universal Resort App for the latest updates.
Child Swap
Most attractions have height restrictions, but every ride offers a Child Swap Option. One adult waits with the non-rider in a dedicated waiting room while the rest of the party rides; then you swap without having to queue again.

Free WiFi is available at Universal Orlando. The Universal Orlando Resort App is available at the Apple App Store & The Google Play Store. You should download the App before you visit.
The official App allows you to store your tickets, display wait times and schedules, support mobile food and drink ordering, and includes Universal Pay, which enables contactless payments. Although not currently in use, on busy days, the App may deploy Virtual Line return times for select experiences.
Make sure everyone in your party has it installed and signed in.
Consider skipping some attractions.
Create a list of must-see attractions before your visit. If time is tight, consciously skip a few lower-priority attractions and shows so you don’t miss your top targets.
Arrive at Universal Orlando early.
Parks are quieter in the morning, and queues are shorter. Mornings are cooler, and you’ll avoid the daily summer storms.
Be prepared for every type of weather.
On any day at Universal Orlando, sunscreen, a hat, and waterproof clothing may all be necessary. Have a plan for what to do if the weather turns.
Expect regular afternoon storms in the hotter months; many outdoor attractions will close temporarily. Plan an indoor show, lunch, or hotel break for mid-afternoon.

Don’t bring a large bag to the park!
List what you genuinely need (phone, portable charger, poncho). Many attractions require you to store your belongings in free, small lockers before riding. If your bag is too big, larger, expensive lockers are available. Avoid using one bag for the whole family and split your belongings into several smaller bags.

Plan meal and drink breaks.
Orlando gets hot. Hydrate and schedule snack stops. Table-service restaurants at Universal Orlando accept reservations, including those inside the parks. Mobile ordering in the app speeds up quick-service lunches.
Use the Single Rider Line.
Assuming you are happy to ride alone, the Single Rider Line can be another way to skip the regular lines, including Epic Universe. Also, unlike Express Pass, it is free. Although it isn’t guaranteed, you will usually experience a shorter wait.

Avoid Harry Potter first thing.
Crowds are larger, and waits are longer in the early morning at the various Wizarding Worlds of Harry Potter. Visit in the afternoon when the crowds will have reduced. Plus, you will get more rides done when everyone else visits Harry Potter.
Relax and have fun!
Universal Orlando can be a little overwhelming. The resort is busy and can be pretty loud. However, it is great fun. Remember to have fun; you’re on vacation!
