Rider Switch Walt Disney World

Some Walt Disney World attractions have height requirements, which can complicate things when you’re visiting with little ones. Good news: you don’t all have to miss out. Rider Switch (also called Child Swap or Baby Swap) lets grown-ups take turns riding while another adult waits with the non-rider. Once they have ridden, you swap without having to rejoin the full line.

Where is Rider Switch offered?

It’s available at most attractions with height requirements, and a handful of others. The list can occasionally change; confirm in the My Disney Experience app on the day you visit.

How Rider Switch works

If you are planning to use Rider Switch at Walt Disney World, you should follow these steps.

  1. Check in together

Bring your whole party to the attraction entrance and tell the Cast Member you’d like Rider Switch. They need to see the child who isn’t riding to set it up. The entitlement is linked digitally to the waiting adult’s ticket/MagicBand/My Disney Experience.

  2. Party 1 rides

Party 1 enters via standby, or Lightning Lane if you’ve booked it with Lightning Lane Multi Pass or Single Pass.

  3. Party 2 returns via Lightning Lane

When it’s their turn, the waiting adult uses the Rider Switch entitlement to return through the Lightning Lane with one additional guest.
Some older guides still mention “up to 3 guests.” Disney’s current guidance is one extra guest. Always defer to the Cast Member at the entrance; some might be more lenient than others.
You’ll usually be given about 1 hour for Party 2 to ride.

Time-saving tips

  • Multi Pass strategy: Often, you only need to book the Lightning Lane for Party 1. Party 2 rides on the Rider Switch entitlement. Use Party 2’s Multi Pass selections on a different attraction to maximize coverage. If you already have a Multi Pass, cancel it and book something else.
  • Cast Members can interpret rules differently. On Single Pass attractions, some will insist on everyone having a Single Pass for Party 1 to use the Lightning Lane.
  • Party 1, regardless of individual Cast Member interpretations of the rules, must always have a reservation to use the Lightning Lane.
  • Keep kids comfy: Remember, Orlando can get very hot. Don’t leave little ones in the sun while waiting for two groups to ride. Try to ride an alternative attraction, meet a character, or visit a playground while they wait.

Common questions on Rider Switch

Do I need Lightning Lane to use Rider Switch?

No. Rider Switch also works with standby. Party 2 will use Lightning Lane and save some time.

Do I need to bring the non-rider to the entrance?

Yes, the Cast Member must see the Guest who isn’t riding to set it up.

Can I stack Rider Switch for later?

The entitlement is time-limited, usually 1 hour after the first group. Confirm the return window when you set it up.

Are there waiting rooms?

Unlike Universal Orlando, there are no waiting rooms for guests using Rider Switch. We think Disney should have added these to newer attractions. It isn’t a great idea that small children are forced to wait outside
