FastPass+ is long gone. Disney Genie+ is gone, too. In their place are three paid skip-the-line options: Lightning Lane Multi Pass, Single Lightning Lane, and the new Lightning Lane Premier Pass. They’re faster than standby, but they’re not free, and costs can add up fast. Arguably, they are an improvement on Disney Genie+, but we miss the free FastPass+.
What is a Lightning Lane?
Lightning Lane is Disney’s “skip the line” entrance for rides and attractions at Walt Disney World. Instead of waiting in the regular standby queue, you use a much shorter line and get on faster. It’s not free; nothing is in Walt Disney World anymore. But on busy days, it may save you hours in the parks.

Lightning Lane Multi Pass
Lightning Lane Multi Pass allows guests to make reservations to join a much shorter line at select attractions. Guests will enter the attraction via the Lightning Lane entrance.
Upon arrival in the US, Guests of Disney Resort hotels and other select hotels can purchase passes up to 7 days in advance of their stay, for their length of stay (up to 14 days). Guests staying elsewhere can purchase passes up to 3 days in advance of their park visit. The price of Lightning Lane Multi Pass changes daily and varies by the park visited. Magic Kingdom is always the most expensive park.
Using the My Disney Experience App, you can choose up to 3 experiences and arrival windows. The most popular attractions can book up quickly, so purchasing a Multi Pass as close to the 7-day window as possible is beneficial.
Once you’re in the park and you enjoy your first Multi Pass experience, you will probably be able to make additional selections. Disney does not guarantee additional selections, and there is no ability to stack Lightning Lane attractions like you could with Genie+ or Fastpass+. This is an important point, as if your first Lightning Lane reservation is not until mid-afternoon, you will not be able to make additional reservations until after your first attraction. In addition, you will only be able to book a reservation for each attraction once during the day.
Assuming your ticket allows Park Hopping, all additional Lightning Lane Multi Pass reservations can be at another park once you have completed your first attraction.
In addition, guests will receive digital downloads of select attraction Disney PhotoPass photos and videos from their day, captured with Disney PhotoPass Service.
Lightning Lane Single Pass
A handful of headline rides are not part of Multi Pass and must be purchased individually as Single Lightning Lane attractions. Prices vary by date and crowd levels. Individual Lightning Lane is available for all guests, including those who have not purchased a Multi Pass. You can buy up to 2 attractions daily before you arrive.
The attractions that currently attract a fee are:
- Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
- TRON Lightcycle Run
- Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind
- Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance
- Avatar Flight of Passage
The attractions are subject to change.

Lightning Lane Premier Pass
To make it even more confusing, Disney has recently added a costly, additional option. Lightning Lane Premier Pass allows Guests one-time entry to each Lightning Lane experience in a theme park. You do not have to book attractions in advance, and it also covers Lightning Lane Single Pass attractions.
The option is closer to Universal Express Pass, but it isn’t cheap. It will be interesting to see if this eventually replaces Lightning Lane Multi Pass.

Can I choose any attraction on the Lightning Lane Multi Pass?
No, Disney does not make it that simple. They have created a selection of tiers at all parks apart from Animal Kingdom. You can only book one attraction in Tier 1 in your initial selections. This does mean you will only be able to book one of the most popular attractions. All attractions are subject to change:
EPCOT Tier 1 Attractions (You can choose up to one experience from this group):
- Frozen Ever After
- Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure
- Test Track
Magic Kingdom Tier 1 Attractions
- Jungle Cruise
- Peter Pan’s Flight
- Space Mountain
- Tiana’s Bayou Adventure
Big Thunder Mountain is currently closed, but it will probably be added to this group.
Hollywood Studios Tier 1 Attractions
- Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway
- Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run
- Rock’ n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith
- Slinky Dog Dash

How much does a Lightning Lane Multi Pass cost?
The system uses Dynamic Pricing and will cost more in peak periods. Usually, Magic Kingdom is the most expensive park, followed by Hollywood Studios. At the time of writing, the highest price recorded was $39 a day for the Magic Kingdom. Currently, prices range from $16 to $39. Thrill Data has been tracking the prices, and you might find this helpful information.
Lightning Lane Premier Pass has cost as much as $449 at the Magic Kingdom. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance has cost as much as $25 as a Single Pass Lightning Lane. However, prices do vary significantly.
Common Lightning Lane Mistakes to Avoid
- Book easy rides first. When visiting Hollywood Studios, you must book Slinky Dog if it is available. You won’t get it later on, and standby waits are always long.
- Forgetting to buy Single Lightning Lane for must-do rides.
- Waiting until park day to start booking. As soon as your booking window opens, you have your best chance to get must-do attractions.
- Book your next attraction straight away. As soon as you tap in, you can book your next experience.
- Not checking during the day. New Passes come up frequently.
Our Verdict on Lightning Lane
If you want to do the most popular rides without spending hours in standby queues, Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Lightning Lane are worth it, especially during busy periods. On quiet days, you might get by without them, but for most guests they’re a wise investment of time and money.
The cost of the Lightning Lane Premier Pass is astronomical, and we struggle to find any justification for purchasing this option. If you can afford it, stay in a better hotel room or buy a nice lunch.
However, if you arrive at the parks early and leave late, you can do most of the biggest attractions. Disney Standby waits are often less than advertised, especially in the evening or during parades and fireworks. Plus, if you join any attraction before closing, you can still ride.
