We have already discussed how we think 2021 could be the last year of MagicBands at Walt Disney World. Now in a further sign of the future, its replacement has been announced, it is time to welcome Disney MagicMobile.

Currently, Disney is stating that guests will have the option of using MagicMobile or MagicBands, but we suspect this will not last long. This is what Disney had to say about the new service:
Launching in phases starting later this year, Disney MagicMobile service is a convenient and contactless way to access MagicBand features like theme park entry through the power of your iPhone, Apple Watch or other smart device. Guests will be able to create a Disney MagicMobile pass through the My Disney Experience app and add it to their smart device’s digital wallet. It works like magic – most features will be available by just holding up your smart device near an access point, just like you do with a MagicBand. Disney MagicMobile service and its features will roll out first on Apple devices.

Disney also states that digital room key features will continue to be available through the My Disney Experience App. This suggests that Disney MagicMobile will be a separate application that does sound quite as convenient as a MagicBand which can do all the jobs.
We noticed one other omission in today’s press release, no mention of FastPass+. There are rumors that it will not be returning to Walt Disney World. Perhaps, it means nothing, but it is an essential part of MagicBands, and omission has made us wonder!
We love MagicBands, and we also love our phones. Phones are an everyday part of our life. MagicBands are something we use on vacation. Call me a traditionalist, but I will continue to use my MagicBands until they fail. We will miss them!
