2021 was expected to be a year of celebration at Walt Disney World. The resort is celebrating its 50th anniversary and had announced a host of new attractions over the next few years. Due to the resort closure and gradual reopening, announcements have been limited on what we can expect for Walt Disney World’s 50th birthday celebrations. However, that has now changed as the resort has announced its initial plans for the celebration.
The festivities will start on October 1st and will run for 18 months. Disney is calling the 50th birthday celebrations “The World’s Most Magical Celebration.” Readers; shouldn’t get too excited, though, as the initial announcements are fairly limited. There have been no details of when we can expect Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure or Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind to open. Guests hoping that there will be a surprise announcement over a new nighttime parade at the Magic Kingdom will also be disappointed. However, Disney has teased that more announcements will come, presumably depending on the travel market.
So what treats can visitors expect for “The World’s Most Magical Celebration”?
Beacons of Magic at All Four Walt Disney World Theme Parks
As part of “The World’s Most Magical Celebration,” icons at each Walt Disney World theme park will transform into magnificent Beacons of Magic at night, coming to life with their own EARidescent glow:
Cinderella Castle will illuminate Magic Kingdom with a dazzling radiance that sparkles with pixie dust.
At Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, a warm light will emanate from the Tree of Life as magical fireflies gather to usher in the magic of nature.
The Hollywood Tower Hotel at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will be awash in a brilliance evoking the golden age of imagination and adventure
And at EPCOT, new lights will shine across the reflective panels of Spaceship Earth, connecting to one another in a symbol of optimism resembling stars in a nighttime sky. The iconic structure’s permanent new lighting will continue beyond “The World’s Most Magical Celebration” as a defining feature of the park.WDWNews
Mickey and Minnie: Dressed for the Occasion
As hosts of “The World’s Most Magical Celebration,” Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse will be dressed in sparkling new looks, custom-made for this special occasion. Highlights of these celebratory designs include beautifully embroidered impressions of Cinderella Castle backed by fireworks, as well as a brocade in multi-toned, EARidescent fabric – all punctuated with pops of gold.WDWNews
So, there you have it! Mickey and Minnie have a new outfit, plus some fancy lights on 4 park icons. To be honest, it isn’t anything to get too excited about. It does feel a little underwhelming.
However, these are early days, and there is so much uncertainty over what will happen in the next few months. Disney isn’t likely to make big announcements when there is uncertainty over future guest numbers. However, if tourism improves, expect much bigger announcements to come in the next few months. Disney will want the 50th birthday celebration to be a massive party.
