If you came from Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, etc., I suspect the title of this post could be considered clickbait. After all, how could anyone lose their hand on the Carousel of Progress? Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress is one of the most tranquil rides at Walt Disney World. While in my opinion, the attraction is a classic, it isn’t a White Knuckle Thriller. However, a man really did lose his hand on the Carousel of Progress recently.
Carousel of Progress is often overlooked by guests visiting the Magic Kingdom, but we previously named it as 1 of 5 attractions not to miss at the Magic Kingdom. The attraction was designed by Walt himself for the 1964 New York World’s Fair. It has also been housed at Disneyland, but since 1975 its home has been the Magic Kingdom.
Carousel of Progress has had several updates but remains a celebration of technological achievements, but its current 1993 look into the future feels somewhat dated. There are rumors that there might be an update for Disney World’s 5oth anniversary.
Carousel of Progress rarely grabs a crowd, but a catchy theme tune, good audio-animatronics & cold air conditioning make this a relaxing break. The song is called There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow and was written by the Sherman Brothers. The Sherman Brothers were behind many movie classic themes including Mary Poppins, Jungle Book, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
As for the lost hand, it was John’s in the 1900 section. Perhaps an indication that the rumored update to the attraction is now long overdue. At least Disney will not find itself in court over this one!
