Hollywood Studios is currently undergoing massive changes. We have refreshed our Hollywood Studios Fastpass Strategy for Summer 2019 including all the latest information on Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Our updated Hollywood Studios Fastpass Tips & Tricks will help you plan a great Disney World Vacation.
The Basics of Fastpass+
If you are visiting Walt Disney World, you must understand the Fastpass basics. Fastpass+ is Disney’s attraction reservation system & allows you to book attractions in advance. Guests who do not make advanced bookings will be met with long lines and waits.
To use Fastpass+ before you visit you must have either:
- Valid Ticket or Annual Pass
- Walt Disney World Resort Hotel reservation plus theme park tickets
Guests who are staying at a Walt Disney World Resort(including Swan, Dolphin plus select Disney Springs Resorts) can book 60 days in advance plus the number of days of their stay.
Ticket holders not staying in the above resorts have a much shorter 30-day reservation window.
You can book your Fastpass Reservations on the Disney Website or by downloading the My Disney Experience App. You must plan to book Fastpass reservations as soon as they become available.
You can make 3 Fastpass reservations before you arrive in the park. Once these reservations are used, you can book an extra pass. You can make extra Fastpass reservations as soon as you join your 3rd attraction line. You can continue booking one additional selection after each attraction until the end of the day or until no more Fastpass slots are available.
We have created a Guide to Fastpass which explains the basics in more depth.
Hollywood Studios Fastpass Basics
Fastpass Tiers at Hollywood Studios will be changing after the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Make sure you understand the system for when you visit.
FastPass Tiers at Hollywood Studios until August 29th
Hollywood Studios has always had Fastpass Tiers which have restricted your advanced booking of the most popular attractions. The opening of Toy Story Land meant big changes to Hollywood Studios Fastpass Tiers:-
- The 3 Toy Story Land attractions: Slinky Dog Dash Coaster, Alien Swirling Saucers & Toy Story Mania will form a new Tier 1.
- All other attractions will now be in Tier 2.
Guests are allowed to advance book one option from Tier 1 and two choices from Tier 2 each day they visit. You can book three selections from Tier 2 if you book no Tier 1 attractions.
FastPass Tiers at Hollywood Studios from August 29th
Hollywood Studios FastPass Tiers are changing on August 29th, the same day as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens. The following will now be Tier 1 attractions:
- Slinky Dog Dash
- Alien Swirling Saucers
- Toy Story Mania!
- The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
- Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith
Everything else will be in Tier 2. Unfortunately, you will only be able to book one Tier 1 attraction in advance. Apart from Star Tours, all the most popular attractions are in Tier 1.
There will be no FastPass selections available for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge attractions on opening. However, it is likely they will be added at a later date.
We suspect that there will be additional changes made to FastPass at Hollywood Studios in 2019 and certainly following the opening of Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway in early 2020.
Are the kids big enough to ride?
Don’t create a park plan that includes all family members riding, to realise too late not all of you can. Many of the Walt Disney World attractions do carry restrictions and are enforced strictly. At the Hollywood Studios these are:
- Twilight Zone Tower of Terror Height Requirement 40 inches.
- Star Tours Height Requirement 40 inches.
- Rock n’ Roller Coaster Height Requirement 48″ inches.
- Slinky Dog Dash 38 inches.
- Alien Swirling Saucers 32 inches.
- Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run at least 38″.
- Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at least 40″.
Also, both Star Tours and Tower of Terror and not recommended for infants under 3 years but in our opinion only the bravest under 5s should ride.
When children are not big enough to ride it does not mean adults and older children can’t. Rider Switch, allows guests with small children to take turns riding while another adult stays with the child. You can learn more in our Guide to Rider Switch.
What should be your Hollywood Studios Fastpass Strategy?
Before August 29th
Slinky Dog Dash is the current Hottest Attraction in Walt Disney World. However, it is not attracting similar waits to Flight of Passage at the Animal Kingdom, but standby lines regularly exceed 2 hours.
We believe you should put every effort into obtaining a Fastpass for Slinky Dog Dash. Make sure you know your key booking windows to get the best chance of securing a Fastpass.
Before opening, we thought Alien Swirling Saucers would attract longer waits than Toy Story Mania. Traditionally Toy Story Mania has attracted huge waits, but we expected these to reduce last summer due to the new attractions and the extra capacity added in recent years to the ride. While the wait for Toy Story Mania is less than previously it is usually longer than Alien Swirling Saucers.
If you are visiting Hollywood Studios for two days or fail to get a Slinky Dog dash Fastpass we recommend Toy Story Mania as your second choice.
From August 29th
It is hard to predict how the new FastPass Tiers at Hollywood Studios will play out. If you are visiting in the fall we advise keeping an eye on waiting times following the change of tiers.
However, if you are visiting shortly after August 29th, we suspect Slinky Dog Dash or Tower of Terror should be your number 1 choice. We recommend using the Single Rider Line for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster.
What should be my Tier 2 Choices?
Before August 29th
This is relatively easy assuming you are brave enough to ride!
Rock N Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror still attract long waits and should be your Tier 2 Selections. If you are not planning to ride either of these attractions, then Star Tours would be a good 3rd choice. Unless the park is particularly crowded other attractions usually will not need a Fastpass reservation.
From August 29th
Apart from Star Tours, all the most popular attractions are in Tier 1. We recommend Star Tours should be your number 1 choice. The remaining attractions are usually fairly easy to enter on the day, but obtaining a FastPass for Frozen Sing-Along Celebration would probably be our second recommendation.
I’m only visiting for 1 day what should I do?
If you are only visiting for one day before August 29th, and have a Slink Dog Fastpass, join Toy Story Mania line at rope drop. As soon as you have ridden Toy Story Mania join the queue for saucers. If you do not manage to get a Fastpass for either, join Slinky Dog on park opening but be ready to wait.
From August 29th your priority will probably be getting into Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and riding Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run. At the moment it is difficult to predict what the best tactics for this will be. However, if you are staying in a Disney Resort you should probably attempt accessing via Extra Extra Magic Hours.
Any additional tactics?
It is difficult to predict tactics after August 29th, but currently, the following tactics usually work.
During Fantasmic crowds might be lighter at the biggest attractions. Rather than wait during peak hours for Toy Story attractions consider skipping Fantasmic so you can hit a shorter line.
The last hour of the park opening can also attract shorter lines. Advertised waits during this period are usually longer than actual wait.
