Hollywood Studios is currently undergoing massive change. There are numerous building projects ongoing in addition to the recent opening of Toy Story Land. However, with recent attraction closures, this is probably the most relaxing park at Walt Disney World to complete in 1 day. Once Star Wars: Galaxy Edge opens this is going to become a jam-packed park and planning will become essential. These are our Top Hollywood Studios Mistakes to Avoid in 2019.
While there might be a lot of developments, there is still plenty to see at Hollywood Studios. Skipping the park, in my opinion, would be a mistake. Hollywood Studios contains some of the best attractions at Walt Disney World including Tower of Terror, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, Star Tours and Toy Story Land.
Dedicate more than 1 day to the park
I am always reluctant to say any park is a half-day park. However; there currently really isn’t a lot of attractions at Hollywood Studios. One day should be plenty for the majority of guests & some repeat visitors will need less time. There are bigger parks to dedicate your time to at Walt Disney World.
Not using the Single Rider Line
Rock N Roller Coaster does attract some very long waits. However; it is one of the few rides in Disney World that has a single rider option. The ride is in the dark, and you will not see the person you’re sat next to! Why wait twice as long to sit next to a friend you can’t see?
Not having a Fastpass Strategy
Fastpass+ is Disney’s attraction reservation system & allows you to book attractions in advance. Guests who do not make advanced bookings will be met with long lines and waits. All guests visiting Walt Disney World must understand the Fastpass basics before they arrive at Walt Disney World and develop a Fastpass Strategy.
Hollywood Studios has always had Fastpass Tiers which have restricted your advanced booking of the most popular attractions. The opening of Toy Story Land meant significant changes to Hollywood Studios Fastpass Tiers:-
- The 3 Toy Story Land attractions: Slinky Dog Dash Coaster, Alien Swirling Saucers & Toy Story Mania are in Tier 1.
- All other attractions are in Tier 2.
Guests are allowed to advance book one option from Tier 1 and two choices from Tier 2 each day they visit. You can book three selections from Tier 2 if you book no Tier 1 attractions.
These tiers are likely to change again in 2019 with the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy Edge and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway.
Not checking if the kids are big enough to ride
Don’t create a park plan that includes all family members riding, to realise too late not all of you can. Many of the Walt Disney World attractions do carry restrictions and are enforced strictly. At the Hollywood Studios these are:
- Twilight Zone Tower of Terror Height Requirement 40 inches.
- Star Tours Height Requirement 40 inches.
- Rock n’ Roller Coaster Height Requirement 48″ inches.
- Slinky Dog Dash 38 inches.
- Alien Swirling Saucers 32 inches.
When children are not big enough to ride it does not mean adults and older children can’t. You can learn more in our Guide to Rider Switch.
Missing the shows
Disney World is not all about rides & kids love the shows at Hollywood Studios. Try and make sure you catch a few of them. Beauty and the Beast, Frozen Sing-Along Celebration & Voyage of the Little Mermaid are all great options.
Not bringing park essentials
Make a list of what you need, e.g. a camera, phone, autograph book, poncho. Make sure you don’t forget the sunscreen & a good hat. Plus you will need access to plenty of water.
You can’t access the park Wi-Fi.
Online access is essential in Walt Disney World. The My Disney Experience App is your essential guide to wait times, maps, showtimes & a lot more. Plus you can reserve Fastpass+ & make dining reservations on the App. Don’t even consider entering a Walt Disney World Park in 2019 without access to Wi-Fi.
Not having a break.
While Hollywood Studios might be more relaxing than other Walt Disney World parks, the Florida heat can still be unforgiving. It is easy to burn out if you are not careful. Make sure you take plenty of time out, drink plenty of water & don’t skip meal breaks.
Visiting on major holidays
Unfortunately, due to annual leave, this might be unavoidable. However, if you can avoid it don’t visit Walt Disney World during major holidays. While you will have a great time no matter when you visit, lower crowds do mean less stress and more fun. If visiting at the busiest times, is unavoidable, our Guide to Beating Crowds at Disney World might help.
Not staying for the night.
All Disney Parks are great at night, but Hollywood Studios has some fantastic nighttime shows. Rivers of Light might be the newest night-time spectacular but Fantasmic, in my opinion, is better. Don’t miss it!
Plus you will not want to miss the sensational projections in Disney Movie Magic or the fireworks in Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular. The problem you might have is that it is usually impossible to see all three nighttime shows.
Wonderful World of Animation is a new nighttime experience that will début at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in May 2019. This new show will be part of the park’s 30th Anniversary celebration. State of the art projections will take guests through a tour of 90 years of Disney Animation.
Make sure you also spend time visiting Toy Story Land at night. Toy Story Land looks sensational at night, and the attractions are even more fun at night.
Not checking what is coming soon!
A lot is changing at Hollywood Studios in 2019 including some exciting new attractions. The biggest highlight will be the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy Edge in late fall. However, several new attractions are opening throughout the year. Our guide to what is new at Walt Disney World in 2019 has further information.
