Now Toy Story land has opened we have updated our Hollywood Studios Fastpass Strategy after reviewing waiting times during the first 2 weeks of opening. Whilst most of our tips are still the same we have adjusted a few suggestions. Our updated Hollywood Studios Fastpass Tips will help you plan a great vacation.
If you are visiting Walt Disney World you must understand the Fastpass basics. Fastpass+ is Disney’s attraction reservation system & allows you to book attractions in advance. Guests who do not make advanced bookings will be met with long lines and waits.
To use Fastpass+ before you visit you must have either:
- Valid Ticket or Annual Pass
- Walt Disney World Resort Hotel reservation plus theme park tickets
Ticket holders not staying in the above resorts have a much shorter 30-day reservation window.
You can book your Fastpass Reservations on the Disney Website or by downloading the My Disney Experience App. You must plan to book Fastpass reservations as soon as they become available.

How many Fastpass Reservations can I make?
You can make 3 Fastpass reservations before you arrive in the park.
Once your first reservations are used you can book an extra reservation. You can make extra Fastpass reservations as soon as you join your 3rd attraction line. You can continue booking 1 extra reservations after each attraction until the end of the day or until no more Fastpass slots are available.
Hollywood Studios Fastpass Basics
Hollywood Studios has always had Fastpass Tiers which have restricted your advanced booking of the most popular attractions. The opening of Toy Story Land will mean big changes to Hollywood Studios Fastpass Tiers:-
- The 3 Toy Story Land attractions: Slinky Dog Dash Coaster, Alien Swirling Saucers & Toy Story Mania will form a new Tier 1.
- All other attractions will now be in Tier 2.
Guests are allowed to advance book one option from Tier 1 and two options from Tier 2 each day they visit. You can book 3 selections from Tier 2 if you book no Tier 1 attractions.
Are you big enough to ride?
Don’t create a strategy that includes all family members riding to realise too late not all of you can. Many of the Walt Disney World attractions do carry restrictions. At the Hollywood Studios these are:
- Twilight Zone Tower of Terror Height Requirement 40 inches.
- Star Tours Height Requirement 40 inches.
- Rock n’ Roller Coaster Height Requirement 48″ inches.
- Slinky Dog Dash 38 inches.
- Alien Swirling Saucers 32 inches.
In addition, both Star Tours and Tower of Terror and not recommended for infants under 3 years but in our opinion only the bravest under 5s should ride.
What should be your Hollywood Studios Fastpass Strategy?
When we first wrote this article there was a lot of guesswork over what would be the most popular attractions in Toy Story Land. As expected Slinky Dog Dash is the current Hottest Attraction in Walt Disney World. However, it is not attracting similar waits to Flight of Passage last summer. However, if you don’t get a Fastpass your wait might easily exceed 2 hours.
We believe you should put every effort into obtaining a Fastpass for Slinky Dog Dash. Make sure you do not miss your key booking windows.
Traditionally Toy Story Mania has attracted huge waits but we expected these to reduce this summer due to the new attractions and the extra capacity added in recent years. Prior to opening, we thought Alien Swirling Saucers would attract longer waits than Toy Story Mania this year. Whilst the wait for Toy Story Mania is less than before it is usually longer than Alien Swirling Saucers.
If you are visiting Hollywood Studios for 2 days or fail to get a Slinky Dog dash Fastpass we recommend Toy Story Mania as your second choice.
What should be my Tier 2 Choices?
This is relatively easy assuming you are brave enough to ride!
Rock N Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror still attract long waits and should be your Tier 2 Selections.
If you are not planning to ride either than Star Tours would be a good 3rd choice. Unless the park is particularly crowded other attractions usually will not need a Fastpass reservation.
I’m only visiting for 1 day what should I do?
If you are only visiting for 1 day and have a Slink Dog Fastpass join Toy Story Mania line at rope drop. As soon as you have ridden Toy Story Mania join the line for saucers.
If you do not manage to get a Fastpass for either new attraction join Slinky Dog on park opening but be ready to wait.
Extra Magic Hours
Disney has already announced Extra Magic Hours for Hollywood Studios every day during July & August. This represents a big challenge to guests not staying at a Disney Resort. Crowds will already be massive for those big Toy Story Land attractions by the time you get in. Last year the Animal Kingdom ran extended hours every day for resort guests but these were in the evening.
However, if you are staying at a Disney Resort consider taking advantage of those extra hours.
Make sure you check My Disney Experience for the latest hours as they will be updated regularly.
Any additional tactics?
During Fantasmic offers another opportunity when crowds might be lighter. Rather than queue during peak hours for Toy Story attractions consider skipping Fantasmic so you can ride with less wait.
