We continue our Southern Caribbean Vlog Series with a stop at Dominica.
Our 4th stop on our Southern Caribbean Cruise was the beautiful island of Dominica. Our ship docked in Roseau the capital of the island.

Dominica was tragically hit by Hurricane Maria on 18 September 2017. Whilst much of the Caribbean was hit hard by both Hurricane Maria and Hurricane Irma Dominica was hit worse than most. Up to 90% of buildings were destroyed including the island’s infrastructure. As this recent article in the Guardian shows the island is still some way from recovering. No date has been set yet for the return of cruise ships an essential source of income for the island. We hope the island recovers quickly and our thoughts are with all residents.

Dominica was granted independence from the United Kingdom in 1978. The island has had a difficult history pre & post independence.

Dominica is a very beautiful island covered in virgin rainforest. We can only hope the beauty returns as the island recovers. When you think about the Caribbean Dominica is probably what you think about. However beaches are not one of the island’s strengths. Our visits was in April 2017.
Our excursion was a city tour and a visit to both the Botanical Gardens & Emerald Pool. Our guide, Dr. Phil, was fantastic and full of useful information and the odd humorous story.

Phil told us about the genetically modified bananas Dominica had developed which were crossed with Marijuana. They are called Happy Bananas and are traded with the Dutch for cheese. I had my doubts about the validity of the story but some of my fellow cruisers seemed more convinced.

The tour explored many of the island’s highlights which can be seen in our Vlog. I am sure you will agree the island is beautiful.

In the afternoon we explored the local market in Roseau. In the evening it was time for some exploring of the ship as we discovered some of the many bars.

Next in our vlogs we visit Barbados and have a tipsy beach hop.
