Lessons Learnt as a Newbie Blogger

October 3, 2016 by @Modlifeisgood Leave a Comment

Hard to believe it is now almost 2 months since I started my blog. Certainly the have been plenty of lessons learnt as a Newbie Blogger in those first 2 months. It certainly isn’t as easy as I first thought.

When I started apart from never having had a website I was new to social media. Now I have a Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest & various other accounts. Some I have found easier than others. I can’t work out what the point is of Instagram and a managed page on Facebook is a lot harder than a personal page it seems.  However a lesson learnt is that taking time developing social media is a must. This is the key route to generate a lot of my early traffic.

My Youtube channel has been a lot of fun but it is still in its infancy and clearly needs a lot of work to generate traffic. Rather than being layabouts and chancers it is clear that most Professional Youtubers work hard for their living. My #Goingfor1Million challenge is not getting completed anytime soon.

The whole of the blog has been a massive lesson. As a Newbie Blogger I had no idea how to set up or run a website….I still don’t. Perhaps I thought that overnight I would have a new Huffington Post or for my cruise brand a new Cruise Critic or for WDW a new WDWMagic. The truth is I don’t and probably never will.

However; it does not mean that I have learnt is that the is no future as a Newbie Blogger. It is actually great fun and 2 months ago I never heard of SEO and now I’m obsessed. Obsessed that I don’t seem able to do get it right but determined I will eventually.

Learning Social Media

As with all hobbies you ultimately hope it will lead to something more. The is a lot of lessons to learn on how a Newbie Blogger generates revenue but for now content is the priority. It goes without saying I dream of travelling the world at other’s expense but for now that remains a dream,

Perhaps one big lesson is that I have attempted to try too many things from the off. A Disney or Cruise or Family Travel site would have been enough but to attempt all 3 with a few extras thrown!  Too much for an experienced blogger let alone a Newbie Blogger. Gaining focus and a clear strategy is essential as we move forward.

However; it is not all bad news traffic is slowly going up on the Blog & the YouTube Channel. In just over 2 weeks I will start attempting blogging live from Disney World. I will hopefully return armed with video for YouTube. To date all the video I have used for YouTube is old home video so it will be good to have some new content to use. I’m looking forward to developing this content and my blogging hobby should continue for at least another few months.

Who would think that a chance encounter with “Legendary Vlogger & Star of Celebrity Masterchef” Marcus Butler would lead to this. Perhaps here is the biggest lesson learnt for a Newbie Blogger not to try to top your 12 year old’s idols. Marcus Butler is good at this and I’m not going to replicate him in 2 months. Plus even if I did my daughter would still prefer Marcus than her middle-aged Dad.
