Learning Social Media the Good & Reddit

If you read back to my very first Blog post I am a Social Media virgin. This blog was setup to prove to my 12-year-old I could do the same as “Superstar Vlogger” & star of Celebrity Masterchef Marcus Butler. If you are not from the U.K. you have probably never heard of him but don’t worry neither had I until a few weeks ago.

However; my daughter chance encounter with Mr. Butler on the Harmony of the Seas means I am now a Social Media whizz. Actually being a whizz is a bit of an overstatement but I now have a blog and a few other accounts. I am enjoying my new hobby though.

Social Media Update

I now have over 1000 twitter followers and my top video viewed on You Tube over 1700 times. This is all a little short of my 1 million target though. Although 1000 followers sounds mildly impressive I think it is probably best to call most of them followers in a very loose sense. I seriously doubt more than a handful actually read anything I tweet.

I still can’t get my head around Facebook though and how a page works compared to your normal profile. Instagram is an oddity as I gain followers it seems without doing very much and they do visit the blog as well.

Stumbleupon

I also have tried a few other Social Media adventures with varying success. Stumbleupon was recent find. StumbleUpon is a discovery engine that finds and recommends web content to its users. Its features allow users to discover and rate Web pages, photos and videos that are personalised to their tastes. You can also submit your own favourite websites to them

Stumble upon is actually great fun and it is pleasing to see I am not the only person who adds crap to the web. I struggle a bit by what they mean by spam and I have submitted several of my pages which only seems to be borderline allowed. However I have had a few blog views from Stumbleupon so assuming they don’t say I am breaking the rules it is all good.

Reddit

Then we come to Reddit. I don’t like Reddit. I don’t like it at all. To me it is the bottom of the pile of the various Social Media sites I have tried.

Reddit is a social media, social news aggregation, web content rating and discussion website. Reddit’s registered community members can submit content, such as text posts or direct links. It is split into sections called sub-reddits which are ran by volunteer moderators.

Here is the problem the moderators they control the site and what they don’t like goes. They are the Demigods of Reddit and you better not disobey them or you are banned. Therefore all debate is hindered as what the Demigod wants is what stands. Anything else they can drop it or drop you.

The certainly is no genuine editorial independence on Reddit. It baffles therefore why it is so popular. It is the 25th most popular website in the world and you can’t imagine the North Korean Press being similarly popular but the differences are minor. In addition it has the cosmetic look of a website from the Windows 95 era.

So why do I hate it so much? Well getting on top of their various regulations is a minefield. On top of this each Demigod has his own personal set of rules which trumps the main Reddit rules. Complicated? You bet!

Well apparently I am a spammer. They are probably right but it was unintentional. In total I have spammed two sub-reddits.

First I signed up to cruise which as you probably know is a personal interest. Somehow and I am not sure how I posted a link to this site but nothing else. I think I did it directly from this site and can’t really recollect how I did. Anyway I did & it isn’t allowed & I have therefore sinned.

The Demigod banned me without discussion. I attempted some discussion but their answers were a bit short so I purposefully wound them up. The result is the Demigods on Cruise Reddit don’t seem to like me & I don’t like them either.

Now funny is a very popular Reddit. I had heard you could get lots of Youtube views from there. I decided to post them a comedy treat i.e. my Rhino Poop video. Now I must warn you this really isn’t very funny but if you want to see it please click below.

Now the Demigods didn’t like this video very much and they deleted it. However; that was after it got a rapid 100 extra views. Which pretty much proves people on Reddit will watch “crap”.

Apparently it was removed as spam as I did message the moderator to find out why. I guess as it does advertise my website it is spam. He ignored any further attempt at discussion to understand why but I would have been happier if he deleted as it was rubbish because spamming wasn’t really the intention.

Perhaps with time I will change my mind on Reddit and start to love it as clearly many people do. For now though it is my least favourite source of Social Media. & I am giving it a rest.
